Cutaneous immunofluorescence studies, a wide variety of routine special stains and immunostains, and high quality digital microscopic images are available. Relevant articles from the medical literature are provided in unusual cases or as requested by the referring physician. Telephonic discussions with Dr. Borel are encouraged at any stage of the patient care process. Dermatologists engaged in Mohs micrographic surgery may obtain assistance with techniques to optimize frozen section quality. We also assist Dermatologists with CLIA required quality assurance slide review. Telepathology services are provided. We utilize an Aperio scanscope allowing us to obtain high quality digital images of all sections on a microscopic slide which can then be viewed from any personal computer on the Internet using downloadable free software. Dermatologists using our laboratory for slide preparation may elect to view their slides as soon as they are prepared, scanned, and uploaded to a secure server at which time an email is sent to the participating physician's email inbox to alert them that their cases are ready for viewing. The Internet displayed images are excellent, and the procedure is interchangeable with the standard live light microscopy experience. The technology is also used for digital slide conferencing, in which Dr. Borel and one or more colleagues in other locations can view the same slides simulataneously on the Internet and discuss the findings in a telephonic conference call. Alternatively, a video conference over the Internet can be substituted for the telephonic conference call to discuss the telepathology findings. Use of a video conference requires a second computer, side by side with the computer used for the digital slide conference.
